Something extraordinary is happening in Africa.

Across the continent, people are coming together to create a brighter future, one driven by innovation, collaboration, and purpose. The recent gathering of over 25,000 participants from 45 countries was more than just an event—it was a movement, a bold step toward positioning Africa as a key player on the global economic stage.

At its heart, this moment is about startups and artificial intelligence (AI)—the engines of the future. But it’s also about people: the entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers, and investors who believe in Africa’s potential and are working tirelessly to bring it to life.

A Vision Takes Shape

The foundation for this transformation is being laid piece by piece, starting with the creation of the AI Scientific Council, a body led by the renowned Professor Merouane Debbah. This council isn’t just a group of experts; it’s a symbol of Africa’s determination to guide its own destiny. By focusing on research, education, and innovation, it aims to align the continent’s needs with cutting-edge solutions.

But ambition doesn’t stop there. The announcement of a National AI Strategy signals a major leap forward. Imagine a future where Africa has its own data centers, where AI solutions are tailored to its unique challenges, and where sectors like agriculture, health, and industry thrive under the power of homegrown innovation. That’s the vision, and a dedicated budget ensures it’s more than just a dream.

Breaking Down Barriers

Africa’s strength lies in its unity. Yet, for AI to truly flourish, there’s a need for a continental policy—a shared framework that fosters cooperation across borders. During the discussions, the call for this policy resonated deeply. It’s not just about regulations; it’s about creating a space where ideas and resources can flow freely, empowering nations to tackle challenges together.

A Shared Commitment to the Future

The journey isn’t just about policies or strategies—it’s about creating lasting change on the ground. That’s where the Ministerial Declaration of Algiers comes in. This declaration outlines clear priorities:

Building infrastructure for digital transformation.

Training young talent to lead the charge in tech and AI.

Accelerating the establishment of an African AI Fund.

Supporting hubs and incubators that nurture innovation.

These steps are the building blocks of an ecosystem where startups can grow and thrive, turning local ideas into global solutions.

Leadership That Inspires

Change doesn’t happen without leadership, and Africa is recognizing the people who are making it possible. Dr. Arhab Nacima, now Secretary-General of the African Startups Conference, is one of those leaders. Her appointment marks a milestone—the creation of a permanent secretariat dedicated to fostering collaboration across the continent.

And then there’s Yacine L., newly elected president of the African Business Angels Federation (AFBAN). His mission? To bring investors into the fold and provide the critical funding that startups need to succeed. With leaders like these at the helm, Africa’s entrepreneurial spirit has the support it deserves.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about technology or economics—it’s about people and possibilities. It’s about creating opportunities for young Africans to stay on the continent and thrive. It’s about reducing dependency on foreign solutions and building something uniquely African.

Africa’s journey is just beginning, but the message is clear: this is a continent on the rise. With AI and startups leading the way, Africa is ready to show the world what it’s capable of.

There’s something incredibly  about this story. It’s not just about innovation—it’s about hope, determination, and the belief that we can create a better future together.

Africa is stepping into its role as a global leader in technology and entrepreneurship. But it needs all of us—investors, innovators, dreamers—to join in. Let’s believe in this vision, invest in it, and work together to make it a reality. Because when Africa rises, we all rise.
