Refugee Entrepreneurship: "Addressing Economic Recovery Amidst Conflict"
December 12, 2024
On December 11-12, 2024, the Union for the Mediterranean Secretariat (UfM), with the support of German Development Cooperation (GIZ), convened the Seminar on Refugee Entrepreneurship: "Addressing Economic Recovery Amidst Conflict" in Cairo.
Amidst the backdrop of geopolitical tensions disrupting economies across the Euro-Mediterranean region, Leancubator, represented by Ziad Nesrine, had the privilege of actively participating in this pivotal event. The seminar brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including policymakers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and civil society representatives, all united by a common goal: to foster actionable strategies that empower refugee entrepreneurs and drive sustainable economic recovery.
Key discussions centered around the development of robust support frameworks and the adoption of innovative approaches to promote refugee entrepreneurship. The sessions emphasized critical enablers to unlock the potential of refugee-led businesses :
- Why Are Refugees Highly Entrepreneurial?
Refugees aren't just driven by necessity, they bring unique strengths to the entrepreneurial world. With prior business experience, diverse skills, and a sharp ability to adapt, they leverage savings, remittances, and community support to launch ventures despite limited access to formal credit. Their resilience, problem-solving mindset, and exposure to multiple cultures fuel innovation and fresh market perspectives
- What Do Refugees Bring to Host Economies?
Refugees drive innovation, market expansion, and economic growth. Their diverse skills, ranging from craftsmanship to digital expertise, fill labor gaps and meet local industry needs. By introducing new products, services, and cultural perspectives, they tap into niche markets and unlock cross-border trade opportunities. Their entrepreneurial ventures attract FDI and international funding in countries with strong refugee integration policies. Ultimately, refugees act as catalysts for economic transformation, resilience, and sustainable growth.
The event also a great platform showcasing inspiring success stories of refugee entrepreneurs who overcame adversity to build thriving ventures. These stories served as powerful examples of resilience and determination, offering valuable lessons and motivation for stakeholders and aspiring entrepreneurs alike.
We thank UFM and all the involved stakholders for the initiative and we look forward to building the foundation for a more inclusive and resilient future.
